Your Electricity. Your Cooperative.
We rarely consider how power gets to our homes, or what all goes into the price we pay for it. As long as the lights come on when we flip the switch--we're good to go! However, knowing how power is delivered and paid for helps you better understand your Morgan County REA bill and the electric industry as a whole.

On the Horizon: Rate Change
Morgan County REA is committed to serving our members and delivering power as affordably as possible. However, sometimes factors outside of our control affect our cooperative.
What's Happening
Inflation, increasing demand, and pressures from government-regulated energy shifts have made it necessary for Tri-State Generation & Transmission Association, our wholesale power supplier, to increase the rates MCREA pays for power by about 6% in 2024. This will in turn affect our members, who haven't seen an increase since 2016--in fact, MCREA lowered rates just last year.
While roughly 70% of your electricity bill goes towards wholesale power every month, the other 30% covers the cost of distributing that power: things such as materials and equipment that MCREA needs to maintain our system. We’ve seen prices go up for these items as well, which also factors into our rates.
What's Next
MCREA is undergoing a cost of service study, to evaluate the best ways to minimize the impact of these industry changes to our membership. This study will help guide the rate change.
In the coming months, MCREA will receive more details regarding the rate increase and will provide further information to the membership when it becomes available. It's important to remember that even though rates and other industry factors are changing, MCREA's commitment to our members remains the same. Your electric co-op will continue delivering safe reliable power to our membership, maintaining the tradition of quality service that you expect and deserve.
