We have received a report of a call made to someone in our area threatening to disconnect their electric service if payment is not made immediately over the phone. The call in question DID NOT come from Morgan County REA. In fact, the party that received the call does not receive electric service from MCREA. Unfortunately, other electric cooperatives in Colorado and around the country have reported similar telephone scams to their member-consumers.
Please be aware that scams of this nature are just that - scams that will try to scare or bully you into giving out your social security, banking or credit card information over the phone.
If you receive a call like the one described above, IMMEDIATELY HANG UP THE PHONE and call Morgan County REA at 970-867-5688. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you give any personal information to anyone who calls you threatening to disconnect your service before calling us back, especially if the caller makes you feel in any way uncomfortable.
Unfortunately, these types of scams frequently target our senior citizens. We would ask that if you have elderly family or friends that may not know about these scams or what to do if they receive a suspicious call, please make them aware that the potential does exist for them to receive a call like this and to please not provide any financial or sensitive personal information over the phone - apparently whether they receive electric service from Morgan County REA or another provider.
Thank you for your attention and for your assistance to help keep our members safe from scams like this.
