CO-OP Month 2020
When we think of October, pumpkins, Halloween and colorful fall foliage often come to mind. But, October is notable for another reason: it’s National Co-op Month! This time each year, cooperatives across the country, including Morgan County Rural Electric Association, celebrate who they are and more importantly, the members they serve.
Celebrating National Cooperative Month informs others about our unique business model, which is based on the Seven Cooperative Principles: Voluntary and Open Membership; Democratic Member Control; Members’ Economic Participation; Autonomy and Independence; Education, Training and Information; Cooperation Among Cooperatives; and Concern for Community.
For co-op employees and members that are familiar with these principles, the month of October is a great opportunity to renew our connection to each other and the mission of MCREA: to serve our members by providing safe, reliable electricity built on a strong tradition and vision for the future. Equally important is our mission to enrich the lives of the member we serve.
As a co-op, MCREA is well-suited to meet the needs of the local community because the association is locally governed. MCREA’s leadership team and employees live right here in our community, and the Board of Directors, who help set long-term priorities for the association, also live locally on MCREA lines and were democratically elected to their positions by neighbors like you.
Similar to how MCREA was built by members who came together in April 1937 to bring electricity to our rural community, cooperatives are advocates for the common good of our membership and community.
A feature that sets MCREA apart from a traditional utility is one of the previously mentioned 7 Cooperative Principles, “Concern for Community.” MCREA partners with local organizations like the Morgan County Fair, North East Weld County Fairs, local school districts, school counselors, 4-H clubs and more for sponsorships, Career Fairs, scholarships and other worthy programs.
